Bigger Is Not Always Better In Air Conditioning

Bigger is not always better, especially when it comes to your air conditioner. Many assume that if their home is not cooling to a desired temperature, then they should look at investing in a bigger air conditioner. Unfortunately, this can actually cause more of a problem.
Why isn’t bigger better?
If your system is too big for your home, it’ll come on and go off many times throughout a day. The problem is, it never stays on long enough to remove the humidity from the home. As a result of that, the house feels cool, but clammy. You might walk around with beads of sweat on your forehead, until you finally decide to head to the thermostat and turn the temperature down even lower, which is going to result in a higher utility bill.
As its gets really hot outside, you may not notice the problem as much because the system is going to run a lot longer. You’ll notice the biggest problem in average temperatures. In our area, that’s anywhere from eighty to about eighty-eight degrees.
How do I find the right sized system?
When a client is interested in replacing their system, we send a comfort advisor out to the home and perform what’s called an engineering survey. That engineering survey enables us to actually measure the home; measure windows, check the orientation of the home and things like that. We then we do what’s called a manual J calculation, which is the only approved method in our industry.
A manual J calculation basically tells us exactly what size air conditioner your specific home requires based on a ninety-five degree day in our area. It takes into consideration the size of your home, the square footage of all your windows and direction in which your walls face. All of these factors have a huge impact on the amount of air conditioning that you require in order to cool your home properly.
What are the results?
The effect is simple: your house becomes very, very comfortable. The right sized system in your home does a great job at removing humidity. We hear of the weather in Phoenix, Arizona. It may be ninety degrees, but they don’t really have humidity, so that ninety degrees in Phoenix is much different than ninety degrees here in West Chester, where it’s a hundred percent humidity. The right sized air conditioner is going to give you that same cool, dry temperature.
At MoreVent, we do everything in our power to ensure that we’re installing a properly sized system in your home. We want to make your home is as comfortable as possible. Give us a call at 1-610-257-7702.
