Plants That Improve Air Quality

The North American Space Agency has been studying the effects that plants have on air quality for more than two decades. Their goal is to find a way to improve the air flowing in space stations orbiting the Earth. It turns out that using plants to help purify the air in space is also useful in homes! Here’s a list of some of the best air-purifying plants that you should be able to find at your local home and garden store.

Garden Mum

This is one of the best performing plants in terms of purifying the air. This plant is excellent at removing formaldehyde, ammonia, xylene, and benzene from the air. On top of these benefits, the plant is inexpensive and should be able to be found at your local gardening shop.

Spider Plant

This plant is one of the easiest plants to maintain in your home, they don’t need too much attention and upkeep making them an excellent choice for homeowners who don’t have a green thumb. They also do a good job of cleaning the air of toxins such as formaldehyde and xylene.

Weeping Fig

It’s commonly known as a ficus tree; however, it’s only a tree in its native home of Southeast Asia. In America, it’s a common houseplant, and a hardy one at that. These plants can grow from two to 10 feet tall. This plant does possess wonderful indoor air purification ability, but in spring, it can also thrive outdoors as well.

Peace Lily

Peace Lily plants are on the smaller side, but don’t let their size discourage you. This plant still packs a punch in its air-cleaning ability. Easy to grow, these plants will flower for much of the summer. Just be aware that their flowers (like most flowers) do produce some pollen and add floral scents to the air, so you may want to avoid having a room full of them.

Aloe Vera

This plant has been revered for its healing qualities stemming from the clear liquid that comes from its leaves. This liquid is full of vitamins and amino acids that have wound healing abilities. But it can also assist in keeping your home’s air clean and clear! You can find this plant in most garden shops.
