Changing Your Air Filters

Air filters are an important part of your system. Dirt and debris are the number one cause of efficiency decrease in your heating and cooling system. At MoreVent, we recommend changing your filters on a regular basis, which will lengthen the life of your system and lower your utility bill.

Understanding how air filters work

The primary function of an air filter is to keep debris from building up in your system. In fact, an eighth inch of dirt on your blower motor and wheel can reduce overall air flow by thirty percent. That thirty percent reduction in air flow ultimately means that the system has to work thirty percent longer to do the same job in your home. What do you think that does to your utility bill? That’s right- it’s probably going to be much higher than it needs to be.
From an air conditioning perspective, build up on the air conditioning coils can reduce efficiency by as much as twenty-one percent and that reduction ultimately leads to an increase in your utility bills. So these are components that we clean as part of your annual maintenance. We know that they are so critical to the function of your system that we want to make sure they get cleaned with the proper solutions. Keeping dirt and debris out of your system also extends the life of your machine and can add years to your heating and cooling system.

Air Filter options

There are a wide variety of filters available in the market. There are filters that take out more dirt and debris than others and those that can actually do more damage to your system than they market. We always recommend speaking to a technician first and getting a proper recommendation on which filter is best for your home. Once you’ve done that, it’s highly recommended that you change your filters anywhere from every month to every three months, depending on the activity in your house.
Our technicians can show you exactly where your air filter is located. We can show you how to change them as well. It’s definitely something that you can do yourself. Sometimes filters are located in easy enough locations, but every once in awhile they’re located within the machine. If they’re located within the machine, our technician can also show you how we can actually move that air filter to outside of the machine, so that it becomes something that you can do yourself.
